Accessory dwelling units (ADU'S) in Massachusetts are now allowed as-of-right?
on Aug 6, 2024, the Governor signed the Affordable Homes Act into law. section 8 of that act amended the Zoning act (MGL Ch. 40A) to allow ADU's up to 900 sq ft. to be built by right.
This means no more long-drawn-out government red tape to get your project approved!
However, as with most Government mandates, the information was not passed on to the local Building Departments in a clear and concise manner. As a matter of fact, a few Building Departments still don't know the law has changed! That's why we here at Gradual ADU have decided to post on a regular basis, as much helpful information regarding this topic as we can.
Our hope is to empower you to confidently take control of your project throughout the design, permitting, construction, inspections and completion.
