Accessory dwelling units (ADU'S) in Massachusetts are now allowed as-of-right?

on Aug 6, 2024, the Governor signed the Affordable Homes Act into law. section 8 of that act amended the Zoning act (MGL Ch. 40A) to allow ADU's up to 900 sq ft. to be built by right.

This means no more long-drawn-out government red tape to get your project approved!

However, as with most Government mandates, the information was not passed on to the local Building Departments in a clear and concise manner. As a matter of fact, a few Building Departments still don't know the law has changed! That's why we here at Gradual ADU have decided to post on a regular basis, as much helpful information regarding this topic as we can.
